In the wardrobe of every woman there is certainly something checkered - at least a handkerchief. This coloring never goes out of style.

Strictly speaking, any checkered fabric has a Scottish and very noble origin.

Generational Ornament

The correct name for the checkered fabric is tartan (literal translation: "drawing"), produced in a unique old-fashioned way. Once, back in the IV century. BC e., the Celts created the checkered fabric (hence the name of the national Scottish men's skirt - kilt). They interwoven colored threads so that squares came out of strips of different colors. Each region of Scotland has its own special pattern, and each clan received its own iconic tartan. There are, however, universal tartans that can be worn by a representative of any clan. For example, Caledonia is a red-blue-green cell. Tartans are symmetrical, asymmetrical and two-tone. The most famous of the latter is black and red.

Fashionable Story

In 1822, the British king George IV visited Scotland in order to calm the unkind inhabitants, and, on the advice of Walter Scott, put on a checkered kilt. Local aristocrats, respectively, also dressed in national clothes. It was thanks to the English monarchs that products from the fabric into the cage became a non-trivial symbol of the traditional British restraint of aristocracy. It was then, in fact, as fashion historians noted, that the cell’s finest hour struck - gradually it became one of the most popular fabric colors.
In the 19th century, in Japan, school uniforms for pupils of prestigious educational institutions began to be sewn from Scotch. But even nowadays, Japanese schoolgirls wear plaid mini-skirts, which has become a separate stylistic trend in modern street fashion.
The rebellious spirit of the 70s completely changed the look at the traditional checkered colors, and she took pride of place in the clothes of ordinary people.

The most famous cell types

Clan names have been lost for centuries, and their sovereign checkered insignia are still popular and in demand. Perhaps the best known are:

Border Pattern

He is familiar to all pied-de-poule ("goose foot") - a symbol of respectability and elegance. In this figure, the corners of the cells, elongated diagonally, as if "go" beyond the edges of the square. The famous goose leg jacket of the heroine Audrey Hepburn in the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's" made this mega pattern popular, and the jacket itself became the most necessary thing in every woman’s wardrobe.
