In the season of colds and infections, a medical mask can provide additional help in protecting against illness. But if masks are in short supply and can not be found in pharmacies, you can make a face mask with your own hands. Of course, such a mask will not be completely equivalent to the factory one, but it will provide some protection. In addition, a fabric mask can be washed and reused.
Just in case, here are the main recommendations of doctors on the use of masks and behavior in general during the spread of viral infections:
* First of all, it is recommended to wear masks for those who are already sick, so that during coughing or sneezing to minimize the spread of infection.
* If you are healthy and want to protect yourself from infection, a mask can also help you. For example, if a sick person sneezes or coughs near you, a mask can limit the infection from getting on your mouth and nose.
* It is recommended to wear a factory mask for no more than 2 hours, fabric or gauze for no more than 3 hours. The fabric mask can then be washed and reused.
* In general, to protect yourself from infection, you need to wash your hands regularly (for at least 20 seconds with soap, washing all places, then wiping dry), do not touch your eyes, mouth and nose (and face in general) with dirty hands and try not to come into contact with those who is infected with the infection.
By the way, a mask sewn from a fabric with your own hands can help during seasonal allergies. For those who are allergic to flowering plants, doctors recommend wearing such a mask when going outside. It can limit the ingress of an allergen into the body during breathing.
DIY sleep mask: a simple workshop
So, 3 master classes: how to make a face mask with your own hands.
Workshop 1: pleated face mask
One of the easiest options for a face mask that you can sew with your own hands. The mask sits comfortably at the expense of the creased folds. The sizes are calculated for the average adult, if necessary, adjust them.
You will need:
- fabric (if desired - 2 types, for masks and for decoration);
- elastic braid (elastic band);
- chalk or pencil for fabric;
- ruler;
- scissors for fabric;
- tailor pins;
- iron;
- sewing machine and thread.
Step 1
Cut out the details: 1 main part 20x36 cm, 2 strips 4.5x10 cm. Also cut 2 pieces of elastic braid of 16-17 cm each.
Step 2
Fold the main part in half, face inward, as shown in the photo. Sew along the side 20 cm long, leaving an allowance of 0.7 cm.
Turn out a detail, spread out allowances and iron.
Step 3
Now lay the folds. Fold the part so that the raw edges are on the sides and the seam is at the bottom. Measure 3.8 cm from the bottom line, place a mark and draw a horizontal line. Measure 2.5 cm from this line and draw a second line.
Fold the fold as shown in the photo. The drawn lines should coincide, the depth of the fold will be about 1.7 cm. Secure the fold along the edges with pins.
To lay the second fold, measure 1.7 cm from the top line (which is also the fold line) and draw a line. Then measure 2.5 cm from this line and draw another one. On these lines, lay the second fold so that the lines coincide. Lay the third fold in the same way.
Sew the stitches, securing the pleats.
Step 4
Pin the elastic tape to the edges of the mask, as shown in the photo.
Fasten the ends of the tape with short lines.
Fold strips for finishing along the inside inside out and iron.
Place the strip over the elastic so that the raw edges align.
Wrap the tip as shown in the photo.
Secure with a pin.
If necessary, cut off the excess part of the strip, leaving 1.5 cm.
Wrap and fasten it the same way.
Lay the stitch back 0.7 cm from the edge. At the beginning and the end - tack.
Unscrew the strip as shown in the photo.
Wrap the strip on the other side and secure with pins.
Stitch to the edge.
Sew from the other side of the strip. Repeat with the second strip. Done.

Workshop 2: multi-layer face mask
It is better to make such a mask from thin cotton fabric or gauze. The fabric here is folded in 6 layers, so it should not be too dense so as not to interfere with breathing. The fabric must be washed, dried and ironed before work.
You will need:
- thin cotton fabric or gauze;
- thin elastic band;
- scissors for fabric;
- ruler or centimeter tape;
- pencil or crayon for fabric;
- scissors for fabric;
- tailor pins;
- safety pin or other device for threading gum;
- sewing machine and thread.
Step 1
Cut out 1 part for the mask. For a medium-sized mask for an adult - 30x60 cm, for a children's mask - 20x40 cm (adjust the size if necessary).
Fold the part along the long sides of the inside out, as shown in the photo. The edges should overlap each other by 1.5−2 cm.
Then fold the part twice as shown in the photo. Leave a 2.5 cm strip on the right side.
Step 2
Twist the free right edge twice and fasten with pins.
Stitch the flap to the edge. From the opposite side, lay a stitch, retreating 1.3 cm from the fold to form a second drawstring. Try on the mask and determine the desired length of the elastic bands. Cut the pieces of gum, thread them into the wings and tie them in knots. Done.

Step 3
Fold the parts in pairs face to face and perform the middle seams of the mask.
