1. The simplest pillows on chairs: a master class
These pillows are made of vinyl. Also for such pillows, you can use artificial leather, thick cotton, linen, upholstery fabric - a material that holds its shape well enough. The design of the pillows is as simple as possible: they are square and suitable for chairs with a seat of the same shape. Here the role of the filler is played by a suitable pillow in shape, you can take a synthetic winterizer or holofiber.
You will need:
- vinyl or other material that holds its shape well;
- square pillow;
- band for ties;
- pencil, crayon or marker for fabric;
- scissors;
- tailor pins;
- sewing machine and thread.
Step 1
Put the pillow on the material laid out on the working surface, and determine the size of the parts: the pillowcase should fit the pillow quite tightly (allowance for the fit - 1-1.5 cm). Add seam allowances and carve two identical parts.
Step 2
Cut two pieces of braid for ties, each 30-40 cm long. Fold the pillow parts with the front sides inward. Mark the places where the pillow will be tied to the legs of the chair or the crossbars of the back. Fold each piece of braid in half and place between the parts at the designated points so that the bend point is 1 cm out. Pin the stitches with pins.
Step 3
If you want the outer edges of the pillow to be rounded, outline these lines. Lay the stitch around the entire perimeter, leaving a hole for turning out. Cut off excess material at rounded corners and cut corners (see photo). Turn out the pillowcase, put the pillow inside and sew the remaining hole.

2. Simple fabric pillows with buttons
For such pillows, you can take a thinner material than for the previous project. The buttons on the pillow not only play a decorative role, but also hold the filler in place, helping the pillow to maintain shape.
You will need:
- fabric for pillows;
- braid, ribbons or fabric for ties;
- 4 large buttons (in this case, on the leg) + fabric for a close-fitting;
- stuff for stuffing (synthetic winterizer, holofiber, synthetic winterizer);
- ruler;
- pencil, crayon or marker for fabric;
- scissors;
- a long needle for hand sewing and a durable thread;
- sewing machine and thread.
Step 1
Measure the chair seat, add 2.5-3 cm + seam allowances on each side. Mark on the fabric 2 identical parts of the pillow and cut them out.
Step 2
If necessary, round the corners on one side.
Step 3
If you sew ties from fabric, cut out two strips of 50x5 cm. Fold them in half lengthwise and sew, and then twist, helping with a stick. If the ties are from the braid, cut 2 pieces of braid of the desired length. Treat short tips.
Step 4
Measure the distance at which you want to sew the ties, fold them in half (or cut in two) and sew them on the front of one of the parts at the designated points.
Step 5
Fold the pillow parts with the sides facing inward so that the sewn ties are between the parts, and sew the parts around the perimeter, leaving a hole for turning out. Cut sharp corners, backing off 2 mm.
Step 6
Turn out the pillow, fill it with filler and sew a hole.
Step 7
Cover the buttons with a cloth.
Step 8
On one side of the pillow, mark 4 points for sewing buttons.
Step 9
First fasten the button sewing area with thread, and then sew the buttons. Done.

3. Pillow + soft back for a chair of complex shape
This master class in the selection is in order to show how to make a pillow and soft back for a chair or hard chair a little more complex than a square or a trapezoid.
You will need:
- fabric for pillows;
- foam rubber;
- sheet sintepon;
- 2 lightnings;
- band for ties;
- marker for templates;
- breadboard knife;
- a pencil for paper;
- crayon, pencil or marker for fabric;
- scissors;
- a large needle for hand sewing and thick threads;
- sewing machine and thread.
Step 1
From cardboard make patterns of pillows and backs.
Step 2
According to the patterns of foam rubber, cut 1 piece each for the pillow and back.
Step 3
From the synthetic winterizer, cut out the details using the finished parts from foam rubber as a template. Please note: you need to add allowances. To calculate their width, divide the thickness of your foam sheet by 2 and add 2 cm (for example: the thickness of foam rubber is 4 cm, which means we add 4/2 + 2 = 4 cm on each side). For a pillow and for a back, cut 2 identical pieces of sintepon.
Step 4
Put the foam part between the synthetic winterizer parts and sew the synthetic winterizer manually over the edge.
Step 5
Open the fabric using cardboard patterns. Add sufficient allowances (focus on the thickness of the foam rubber and the thickness of the synthetic winterizer, do not forget the allowances for the seams). Cut out the details: 2 identical for the pillow and back.
Step 6
If you want the covers to be removable, sew zippers. One simple way to sew zippers into a pillowcase is here.
Step 7
Sew the covers around the perimeter, twist and place the filler inside.
Step 8
Designate a place for ties. Cut 2 pieces of braid of the desired length (about 40-50 cm), process the ends and sew to the pillows manually (see photo). Done!

4. Chair cushions with anti-slip backing
If you need to sew pillows on chairs of such a design that does not allow you to attach soft seats to the legs or the crossbars of the back, you can use a non-slip carpet cover. It is better to sew a simple pillow and take materials that hold shape well (see workshop 1).
You will need:
- material for pillows;
- foam rubber;
- sheet sintepon;
- anti-slip tape or carpet backing;
- breadboard knife;
- scissors;
- pencil or marker for fabric;
- sewing machine and thread.
Step 1
Make a pattern and cut a foam rubber part on it.
Step 2
Wrap the foam rubber with synthetic winterizer, as described in steps 3 and 4 of workshop 3.
Step 3
Cut out the details from the fabric and sew the case, as described in steps 5, 6 and 7 of master class 3.
Step 4
Position the tape or backing on the chair (you can cut out a part in the shape of a chair seat from the backing) and lay the pillow on top.
